Release Date: July 12, 2010

Sparta students receive award for work on food drive

Students from Sparta High School were recognized during the June 28th Sparta Board of Education meeting for collecting the largest amount of food through the Champions for Charity food donation project. Freeholder Director Jeffrey M. Parrott presented a trophy to National Honor Society President Christopher Kerr, Vice President Jenny Konecnik, who was in charge of the project, and Advisor Debra Allshouse. Honor Society Secretary Sarah Konecnik was unable to attend the ceremony.

In addition to Freeholder Director Parrott, Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services Director Carol Novrit and Sparta High School Principal Dennis Tobin both commended these students as well as the entire student body at Sparta High School on their outstanding work. Ms. Novrit also spoke of the grim state of the food pantry prior to the Champions for Charity project and the major impact this project has had on the lives of many Sussex County residents who have been helped by food donations.

Freeholder Director Jeffrey Parrott and his wife, Lisa, donated a plaque dedicated to Champions for Charity. The plaque was unveiled at the Sparta Board of Education meeting and is now proudly hung outside the Freeholders’ office at the Sussex County Administrative Center. A plate engraved with the name of the school that collects the most food during each school year will be added to the plaque annually.

Sparta High School is engraved on the first plate for the 2009-2010 school year. Sparta High School collected 19,930 pounds of food in March 2010. Ten Sussex County High Schools collected a total of 88,480 pounds of food for the Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services food pantry.
