July is UV Safety Month

Summertime has arrived and many Sussex County residents will be spending their days outside in the sun. Although the sun can be fun, it can also be harmful to your health. July is UV Safety Month and a good time to remember to protect yourself from damaging ultraviolet radiation (UV). Excessive amounts of UV can cause cancer, eye damage, and other health problems. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, "the level of ultraviolet radiation is three times greater in the summer months than during the winter." Some exposure to UV is necessary for the body's production of Vitamin D, but other sources of the vitamin are available through food and supplements.

You can take steps to protect yourself from harmful UV rays and reduce your risk of sun-related illnesses. Proper sun protection includes wearing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Your sunscreen should be waterproof, but always reapply after swimming or sweating and approximately every two hours. Also wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers the ears and neck, sunglasses with UV protection, and protective clothing that covers the skin. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade whenever possible.
