Public Hearing Touts Programs and Services for Sussex County Seniors

The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services Annual Public Hearing was held on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the Sparta Senior Center. Over 65 seniors, service providers and interested citizens participated in the mandated Hearing. The purpose of the Public Hearing is to identify and prioritize needs for consideration in the development and updating of the Division's Area Plan Contract with the New Jersey Department of Health and Seniors Services, Division of Aging and Community Services, as mandated by the federal Older Americans Act.

MaryLou Schnurr, Director of the Division of Senior Services, opened the hearing with an overview of the Division's mandates, funding, and procedures for allocating grant dollars for programs and services that support seniors and caregivers in their quest to enable citizens, age 60+, to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible, in their homes and communities. A written description of funded services was available to attendees. Funded service providers were on-site with informational displays and literature regarding their programs.

Despite on-going marketing via newspapers, magazines, radio, cable TV, flyers, posters, and more, many people remain unaware of the scope and variety of programs and services available to seniors and caregivers. The majority of the programs are FREE with suggested donations accepted. Considerable discussion took place on how to expand outreach to increase awareness with many suggestions submitted by the participants. Click here to review the minutes of the Public Hearing.
