Sussex County Plans for Annual Homeless Count

Sussex County has been conducting a homeless count entitled the "Point in Time" since 2004 in order to get a snapshot of the homeless families and individuals in our community on one given day. The Point in Time survey provides the human service community an unduplicated count of the homeless and the chronically homeless in our County at a given point in time. For 2010, this given point in time will be Wednesday, January 27, 2010.

Through the survey, demographic characteristics and other data can be analyzed, patterns and trends can be recognized and needed services for this population can be determined, including additional shelter and supported housing services, once all of the outlined information is collected. The human service community then has the information at hand to pinpoint the resources needed to fill current gaps in services. The Point in Time survey is also a valuable tool for educating the general community on homelessness and for presenting information for local, state and regional planning.

Sussex County has begun the planning for its next count. Agency representatives, county government, and community members are presently meeting to prepare. On January 27, 2010, two field teams of volunteers will be going out on structured routes where homeless have been identified in the past, to County free lunch programs, and local boarding homes & motels to identify homeless individuals and families. Once identified, a family or individual will be asked to complete an anonymous survey with the volunteer in order to collect vital information. Also, agency providers will be entering all of their homeless individuals and families electronically and reaching out to churches, schools and police stations for their participation in this count. All of the work is solely to generate the most accurate count possible of who is homeless in Sussex County.
