Seniors should mark their calendars to take advantage of seven very special events that will take place in 2010.

Feb 24 - A Project Healthy Living Kickoff on February 24, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Adam Todd Caters, in Andover, will present an overview of all of the Health and Wellness Initiatives of the Sussex County Division of Seniors Services including: "Take Control of Your Health," which provides seniors and caregivers with tools and techniques to effectively manage chronic conditions; "Project Healthy Bones," an education and exercise program using light weights designed for men and women who are at risk or have osteoporosis; "Move Today," a non-aerobic, resistance band exercise program designed to improve flexibility, strength and stamina; "A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls," a program that offers practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling, address safety issues, increase activity levels, and improve balance, flexibility and strength through exercise. Some of the programs are offered in collaboration with Skylands RSVP Volunteer Resource Center, NORWESCAP, Inc. Those who attend the Project Healthy Living Kickoff will also learn about leadership opportunities for each of the programs. This FREE event includes a full breakfast buffet and requires pre-registration.

May 14 - Older Americans Day will take place on Friday, May 14, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Selective Insurance, in Branchville. This special event includes continental breakfast, exhibits, educational/enrichment programs, lunch and door prizes. There is a minimal charge for this event and pre-registration is required.

June 3 - Seniors have the opportunity to let their voices be heard at the Division of Senior Services' Public Hearing on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., at the Sparta Senior Center. Give input to the Division's Area Plan by helping to identify unmet needs. Hear about currently funded programs and services.

August 12 - Senior Day at the Fair is scheduled for Thursday, August 12, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This FREE special event includes continental breakfast, exhibits, entertainment, door prizes and presentation of the Sussex County Senior of the Year Award.

September 15 - The 2010 Caregiver Expo will offer Caregivers the opportunity to visit with representatives of organizations that offer goods, services and programs for seniors and support for caregivers enabling elder citizens to remain as independent as possible in their homes and communities. Thirty plus exhibitors can be conveniently visited under one roof at the Adam Todd Caterers, Andover, on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. This FREE event includes refreshments. Pre-registration is required.

October 16 - A Healthy Living Festival will take place at the Hardyston Middle School, on Saturday, October 16, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event offers numerous FREE health screenings, a vaccine clinic, informational health and safety exhibits and life enrichment opportunities.

November 7 - Veterans will be honored at the 10th Annual Salute to Military Veterans that will take place on Sunday, November 7, 2010, at 2 p.m., at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. The event includes a flyover, parade, exhibits, entertainment and refreshments.
