Sussex County Gets Three New Buses for Their Transit Office, Skylands Ride
Three new vehicles have been delivered to Sussex County Transit, Skylands Ride to replace some of its older buses. “The arrival of these buses has allowed the organization to serve its customers more efficiently and reduces the interruption of service due to vehicle breakdowns,” according to Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator of Sussex County’s Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services. These new vehicles are part of the continuing growth of the Office of Transit and its ability to serve more Sussex County residents in need of transportation.
The arrival of three new buses is a milestone of the many great enhancements and growth for the Sussex County Office of Transit, Skylands Ride, and the customers it serves. The changes resulted from a coordinated effort to make transit operations more efficient and customer friendly and to serve more Sussex County residents. Tim Sharpe, Regional Program Administrator for Local Programs at New Jersey Transit, states, “Sussex County has re-invented itself into a premier provider of community transportation services.” Transit customers are also complimentary. Their comments may be summed up in the words of one customer, “You do a wonderful job for people who have no help of getting places. Keep up the good work.”
The transit system operates Mondays through Fridays providing transportation services to the public. There are special community transportation services for seniors, persons with disabilities and persons going to work. The new buses will be placed on the road immediately to transport passengers taking advantage of these services.
Over the past 18 months, Sussex County residents have seen a new transportation Customer Guide and a more user friendly Loop-Bus Schedule. Community transportation service rides are now being scheduled using a computerized program, resulting in an increase in ridership of 25% since January 2008, while decreasing driver overtime by 43%. The changes have been instituted to make certain that Sussex County Transit, Skylands Ride, operates in the most efficient way possible to provide the maximum number of rides to the maximum number of Sussex County residents.
