Release Date: September 23, 2008

Sussex County residents concerned that they may not be able to keep their home warm this winter may be able to find heating assistance through several federally funded programs which are available through NORWESCAP.

The price of home heating energy has risen significantly over the past two years.  Sussex County residents concerned that they may not be able to keep their home warm this winter may be able to find heating assistance through several federally funded programs which are available through NORWESCAP.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides grants to eligible households that pay for home heat directly or have heating costs included in their rent.  The application period is from November 1st through March 31st.  Eligibility is based upon federally established guidelines of household size and income.  If accepted into this program, the customer will receive a two party check made payable to the customer and their fuel supplier and may be eligible for additional emergency benefits.  Residents found eligible for Food Stamps are automatically enrolled in this program.

Residents in need of heating assistance may inquire about the above mentioned programs by contacting NORWESCAP at 1-888-792-9745 or 1-973-383-6020.

Eligible senior citizens and Supplemental Social Security Income (SSI) recipients can receive an annual credit totaling $225.00 on their gas and/or electric bills through NJ Lifeline.   Applicants not eligible for the above mentioned programs may qualify for assistance through NJ SHARES.   Residents may inquire about these programs by calling the Division of Social Services at 1-973-383-3600 or by visiting their office at 83 Spring Street, Suite 203, Newton, during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to obtain information and/or applications for heating assistance.
