Sparta Couple Remembers The Sussex County Library

The Sussex County Library has received $91,000 from the William Silconas Trust, and it will also be receiving an additional $162,000 from the Estate of June Silconas. These gifts are the largest donations ever received by the Sussex County Library.

Bill and June Silconas were lifelong dairy farmers who spent most of their life on their farm in Sparta. When Bill Silconas retired from active dairy farming, a part of his farm was sold to the Sussex County Vo-Tech Board of Education for the current Vo-Tech High School. Shortly after the death of Bill Silconas and his daughter, Betty June Silconas, in March 2004, William Kulsar, CPA and Executor/Trustee, found in a safe deposit one hundred poems written by Betty June Silconas . In a hand-written will, the poems were left to the Sussex County Library.

With the assistance of Freeholder Gary Chiusano, a meeting was arranged with Stan Pollakoff, Library Director of the Sussex County Library, to complete the terms of the will. Mr. Kulsar and Mr. Pollakoff decided a book of poetry would be the appropriate medium for the poems because copies of the book would be placed in each branch of the County Library System. Mr. Pollakoff agreed to organize the poems and oversee the completion of the book, which was titled “FIELDS OF POETRY.” After the completion of the book, copies were placed in the libraries for the reading pleasure of the library’s patrons. The book contains fifty poems, and they cover many events, seasons, and life experiences of Betty June Silconas on the “Silconas Farm,” where she grew up. Betty Silconas was an avid reader and library user, and she loved to read and write poetry.

Mr. Pollakoff also introduced Mr. Kulsar to Dr. Brad Gottfried, who was the President, at the time, of the Sussex County Community College. With a gift of $145,000 from Mrs. Silconas, the Betty June Silconas Scholarship was established and the Betty June Silconas Poetry Center was located in the College Library.

Mrs. Silconas died in September 2006, and she thanked the County Library with a bequest in her will. Mrs. Silconas was able to enjoy FIELDS OF POETRY, the collection of poems written by her daughter, through the understanding and help of the Sussex County Library Director.

The County of Sussex and the Board of Chosen Freeholders are grateful to the Silconas family for their generous support.
