Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced the sentencing of Thomas Varela, who appeared before the Honorable William J. McGovern III, J.S.C., at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton on June 9, 2017.
Varela, age 34 of Hamburg, NJ, was sentenced to 364 days in Keough Dwyer Correctional Facility and four (4) years of probation. He was ordered to complete inpatient substance abuse rehabilitation, the D.E.C.I.D.E. program, and parenting classes. Varela was also ordered to pay mandatory fines and fees.
Varela pled guilty on April 17, 2017 to one (1) count of aggravated assault, a third degree offense and one (1) count of child abuse, a fourth degree offense.
On July 17, 2016, Varela was arrested for aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Varela was represented by Steven Insley, Esq., and the State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Stephanie LaCarrubba.
