Press Release - Sentencing of Nicholas DeGroat

     Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced the sentencing of Nicholas DeGroat, who appeared before the Honorable William J. McGovern, III, J.S.C. at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton on February 24, 2017.

     DeGroat, age 37, of Highland Lakes, was sentenced to three years Probation on condition that he undergo a TASC evaluation and follow all recommendations, handwrite a 250 word letter of apology to Franklin Weis Supermarket, pay $1406.13 restitution, complete 50 hours of community service, submit a DNA sample, testify truthfully against his co-defendant and pay $155.00 in court fines and fees.

     He pled guilty on January 9, 2017, to third degree Conspiracy to Commit Shoplifting. 

     In January of 2016 the defendant conspired with a co-defendant to shoplift over $1400.00 worth of merchandise at the Franklin Weis Supermarket, including over-the-counter pharmacy items.

     DeGroat was represented by Janine Cerra, Esq. and the State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Brent M. Rafuse.
