Today, Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced the indictments of Tina Diakos and Ozkan Cengiz, residents of Butler, New Jersey.
On Thursday, August 18, 2016, Diakos was indicted by a Grand Jury for three counts of second degree arson, one count of second degree insurance fraud, one count of third degree criminal mischief, and one count of second degree witness tampering. Cengiz and Diakos both were indicted on one count of second degree conspiracy to commit arson. The indictment alleges that Diakos purposely started a fire and destroyed the building known as The Jerzeez Diner located at 2 Andrea Drive, Vernon, New Jersey to collect insurance money. The indictment also alleges her boyfriend, Cengiz, conspired with her to do so.
On Friday, August 19, 2016, Cengiz was located at his place of employment by members of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Vernon Police Department and arrested. Mr. Cengiz, 39, was lodged at the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility in lieu of $65,000 bail with no 10% option.
The charges are merely accusations and Mrs. Diakos and Mr. Cengiz are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
