Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced that the Sussex County Grand Jury handed up an indictment to the Honorable William J. McGovern III, J.S.C., at the courthouse in Newton on June 9, 2016.
The indictment charges Samuel G. Caruthers, age 46 of Mountain Lakes, with third degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child, two counts of third degree Aggravated Assault, third degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and fourth degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. The case was investigated by Patrolman Ronald Koumaras of the Vernon Township Police Department. It is alleged that on February 14, 2016, the defendant repeatedly punched a child victim in the face and poked him in the chest with the pointed end of a ski pole.
The case was presented to the Grand Jury by Assistant Prosecutor Donald F. Cox, Jr. Arraignment before the Superior Court in Newton took place on July 18, 2016, and Caruthers entered a plea of not guilty.
A Grand Jury indictment is a charge only. The defendant is presumed innocent until guilt may be proved at a jury trial.
