Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced that the Sussex County Grand Jury handed up an indictment to the Honorable William J. McGovern III, J.S.C., at the courthouse in Newton on June 9, 2016.
The indictment charges Matthew L. Heyman, age 24 of Sussex, with second degree Vehicular Homicide. The case was investigated by Detective Keith Curry of the Vernon Township Police Department. The Grand Jury alleges that on January 29, 2016, the defendant was driving while intoxicated and caused a head-on collision with another vehicle on Route 565 in Vernon causing the death of the other driver.
The case was presented to the Grand Jury by Assistant Prosecutor Donald F. Cox, Jr. Arraignment before the Superior Court in Newton took place on July 5, 2016, and Heyman entered a plea of not guilty.
A Grand Jury indictment is a charge only. The defendant is presumed innocent until guilt may be proved at a jury trial.
