Press Release - Indictment of Teresa Verbout
Release Date: June 02, 2016

Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced that the Sussex County Grand Jury handed up an indictment to the Honorable William J. McGovern, III, J.S.C., at the courthouse in Newton on May 26, 2016.

The indictment charges Teresa Verbout, age 56, of Sparta, with first degree Manslaughter and second degree Death by Auto.  The case was investigated by Det. Jeffrey McCarrick of Sparta Police Department.  The Indictment alleges that on December 8, 2015 the defendant drove her Jeep Grand Cherokee in the wrong/opposite direction of southbound Route 15 striking the vehicle operated by Robert Hunter, III head on and killing him.  Subsequent investigation revealed Verbout’s blood alcohol content was above the illegal limit of 0.08%.
The case was presented to the Grand Jury by Assistant Prosecutor Brent M. Rafuse.  Arraignment before the Superior Court in Newton will be within the next two weeks.

A Grand Jury indictment is a charge only.  The defendant is presumed innocent until guilt may be proved at a jury trial.
