"Voices of Recovery" to Honor Mental Illness Awareness Week
Release Date: September 08, 2014

"Voices of Recovery" to Honor Mental Illness Awareness Week

The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Mental Health Board and partnering agencies will host a "Voices of Recovery" event in honor of Mental Illness Awareness Week on the morning of Wednesday, October 8, 2014. This free event, which is open to the public, will feature a NAMI "In Our Own Voice" presentation and a display of artwork, photography, handicrafts and poetry by recovered and recovering mental health consumers from the Sussex County area. It will be held from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., at the Romano Conference Center at Newton Medical Center, 175 High Street, Newton, NJ. Pre-registration is required by calling 201-317-6139, as seating is limited. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

"In Our Own Voice" is a program created by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), which combines a moving video with the live personal testimony of two local residents to bring audiences the message that people can and do recover from severe mental illnesses such as major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The presentation covers issues frequently faced by people who experience mental illness, including "dark days," denial, acceptance, treatment, coping strategies, successes, hopes and dreams. The presenters answer audience questions about mental illness and provide information about peer support programs and professional treatment. They also speak frankly about the discrimination and stigma too often faced by people with mental health disorders, as well as their family members.

Mental health consumers who would like to submit artwork, photographs, handicrafts, or poetry to be displayed at this event are invited to call Sussex County Mental Health Board Chair Rachel Helt at 973-940-3194 ext. 10 or email rhelt@familypartnersms.org to request a submission form. The deadline to submit works for consideration will be Monday, October 6, 2014, at noon. Mental health agencies may collect and submit the works of their own clients to be displayed in a group arrangement provided by the agency, as pre-arranged with Ms. Helt.

The "Voices of Recovery" event is jointly sponsored by the Sussex County Department of Human Services, Mental Health Board and its Professional Advisory Committee (PAC), Atlantic Behavioral Health at Newton Medical Center, NAMI Sussex and St. Clare's Intensive Family Support Services. The sponsors hope the event will help to dispel the stigma too often associated with mental illness.
