Congregate Nutrition Program in Sussex County
Release Date: November 26, 2012

Congregate Nutrition Program in Sussex County

[Newton, NJ] Effective January 1, 2013, the Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services is pleased to announce that they will be assuming responsibility for the Congregate Nutrition Program for seniors in Sussex County. The County of Sussex has proposed Shared Services Agreements with Franklin Borough, Hopatcong Borough, Newton Housing Authority and Vernon Township to assist with providing nutrition services at the current nutrition sites within those municipalities. The relationship with the municipalities will allow the County of Sussex to provide a more effective and efficient service to seniors utilizing the nutrition program.

The Congregate Nutrition Program is available to those ages 60 or over to provide nutritionally adequate meals that are one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), which is established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program is designated to promote the independence, dignity, health and well being of the participants. The Congregate Nutrition Program provides nutritionally adequate meals to clients at the four congregate nutrition sites, five days a week. Social activities, programs and guest speakers are available on various days for the participants to gain insight and knowledge on a variety of subjects. The Congregate Nutrition Program started in Sussex County in 1973 by opening sites in Hopatcong and Newton. Sites in Sussex, Vernon and Franklin followed later. A notice of at least 24 hours is required at each site to reserve a meal for the following day's meal. The menus are published every Sunday in the Lifestyle Section of the New Jersey Herald. The Congregate Nutrition Program is funded through federal and county funding.

As of November 1, 2012, the food for the nutrition program is now being prepared by Newton Medical Center and then distributed to the four congregate nutrition sites. Newton Medical Center is well versed in food preparation for this population and will provide a variety of menu choices to the participants.

Currently, the Congregate Nutrition program provides an average of 100 meals per day to the four congregate nutrition sites within the County. To obtain additional information about this beneficial program or to make a reservation at one of the congregate nutrition sites, contact the Division of Senior Services at 973-579-0555, ext 1221.
