The Sussex County Education Partnership
Release Date: November 04, 2011

The Sussex County Education Partnership

The Sussex County Education Partnership in collaboration with the Sussex County Municipal Alliance held its school kick-off for the 2011-2012 school year on October 10, 2011, at Project Self Sufficiency, in Newton. Over 100 school personnel and children's behavioral health providers attended and participated in the event. The event was held as an ongoing effort to meet the mission of the Education Partnership. The mission of the Sussex County Education Partnership is to develop, promote, and enhance collaborative efforts between schools, child behavioral health system of care partners, and DYFS to improve the well being of children in Sussex County, keeping them at home, in school and out of trouble.

The October 10, 2011 event was created by evaluating feedback from surveys given to local schools and collaboration with the Sussex County Association of School Counselors. The goal of the day was to engage, educate and empower school professionals to assist in reducing substance abuse and bullying by prevention and identifying youth with problems and referring them to treatment. Highlights from the workshop in morning session included a presentation on bullying and cyber-bullying by Jerry Neidhardt from the Prosecutors Office, drug trend overview by Becky Carlson from the Center of Prevention and Counseling, an overview of a substance abuse prevention assessment tool for adolescents by Dr. Debra Koss. In the afternoon session there was an overview of the Child's System of Care from a parent's perspective, giving a real life scenario on how the behavioral health system of care can help.

The event was well received and an attendee stated that, "We have so many caring and concerned people here in Sussex County that want to help our youth. Also, the leaders of our community are doing a tremendous job in educating the educators." The Education Partnership looks forward to being invited into the schools throughout the school year to assist in keeping kids at home, in school and out of trouble!
