Fall Prevention Awareness Week Activities
(Newton, NJ) Approximately, one-third of adults age 65 and older fall each year. Close to one-third of falls in older adults result in serious injury such as hip fracture or head injury. The majority of falls in older adults occur in the home. Falls can be prevented. Learn how by joining the Sussex County Division of Senior Services for a variety of activities during Fall Prevention Awareness Week-September 20-26, 2009.

Lunch is available following the presentations for those who make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance by calling the chosen site. Transportation is available by calling Skylands Ride (Sussex County Transit) at 973-579-0480 at least 48 hours in advance.
There will also be a Falls Prevention Awareness session at the Sussex County Adult Day Center, 55 Mill Street, Newton, NJ, on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at 3 p.m. for seniors and caregivers. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by calling the Center at 973- 579-6699.
The Division of Senior Services’ fall prevention initiatives include an eight (8) week, volunteer coach led program, “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls.” Those who are interested in becoming volunteer leaders for this and other evidence-based health promotion programs are invited to attend an informational session on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Sussex County Main Library.
In addition, FREE Balance Screenings, sponsored by the Sussex County Homestead Balance Center, will be offered at the Division of Seniors Services Healthy Living Festival for adults age 50 or older. This event will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Hardyston Middle School, which is located at183 Wheatsworth Road, in Hamburg. The Healthy Living Festival includes a variety of health screenings for conditions that may contribute to fall risk such as medication side effects or blood pressure issues.
