2009 Child Abuse Prevention Month
Release Date: March 27, 2009

2009 Child Abuse Prevention Month

Communities across New Jersey are recognizing that healthy childhood experiences are not just good for children, but good for their own neighborhoods as well. The actions we take to promote healthy child development are the very actions that help to prevent child abuse and neglect, like parent-child interaction, reading and constructive play. At a time of stress in our nation due to our economic uncertainty, it is crucial to spend more time learning how stable, nurturing relationships influence a child's developing brain and provide a foundation for all future development.

Unfortunately, too many children are exposed to intensive stress like child abuse and neglect. Too much stress is bad for anyone and can be devastating to child development. This is why prevention is so critical. Keep Kids Safe (a council of the Sussex County United Way) and the Department of Human Services are working to increase awareness and promote child abuse prevention in our community.

Child abuse CAN be prevented. If we focus on community activities and public policies that prioritize prevention right from the start, we can work together to make sure child abuse and neglect never happens. The month of April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and by promoting prevention activities in our community, the Keep Kids Safe Council is helping to ensure that ALL kids have the happy, healthy and safe childhoods they deserve. To learn more about the activities and events that the council is promoting please refer to the Child Abuse Prevention Calendar, or contact Melissa Latronica, Youth Services Coordinator, Sussex County Division of Community and Youth Services, (973) 948-6000 ext. 224, or visit www.preventchildabusenj.org.
