Autism Awareness Month is celebrated every year during the month April. The purpose is to provide public awareness about autism. Autism is a complex developmental disability that affects an individual’s social interaction and communication. Children and adults with autism tend to have difficulty with verbal and non verbal communications, social interactions and leisure or play activities. There is no single cause for autism. It is generally agreed however, that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. It is widely believed that psychological factors are not the cause of autism.
Early intervention is important addressing the symptoms associated with autism. Individuals with autism respond well to highly structured, special education programs that are designed to meet the individuals' needs. It is important for family members and treatment providers to address areas of social skill development, communication, behavior and sensory integration.
