Be a Germ Buster

Release Date: March 10, 2008
Health Educator, Kristin Brown explains the importance of proper handwashing

(Newton, N.J., March 10, 2008) Did you know some cold and flu germs can last up to 3 days on hard surfaces? 80% of communicable disease can be spread through touch. Washing hands for 30 seconds with soap and warm water is the single most important factor in preventing the spread of infection. It is estimated that 2 million patients in the United States get an infection in hospitals, long term facilities, clinics, and other medical centers each year. In an effort to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the Sussex County Division of Health is providing county wide hand hygiene programs to long term care facilities during the months of February and March. It is extremely important to wash hands, especially now during cold and flu season. More information can be obtained at www.sussex.nj.us or www.cdc.gov
