The Sussex County Cancer Coalition will be participating in the American Cancer Society's annual event, Relay For Life®.
The Sussex County Community Health Improvement Plan confirms that cancer is a leading public health priority issue in the County. In an effort to raise awareness about this health concern, the Sussex County Cancer Coalition will be participating in the American Cancer Society's annual event, Relay For Life®. This year's Relay® for Greater Sussex County, NJ, will be held on May 30-31, 2009 at Sussex County Community College, One College Hill Road Newton, NJ 07860. The Cancer Coalition's team name is, Cancer-Free 4 SC.
The first Relay® was held in 1986 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon, who was simply interested in raising funds for the Tacoma, Washington American Cancer Society. Over two decades later, it has become a nationally recognized event. According to the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life® consists of "teams of people who camp out at a local school, park, fairground or other designated area and take turns walking or running around a track or path and each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. The times of events vary, but most take place overnight, and can last up to 24 hours in length."
Cancer survivors and Caregivers are celebrated during the event and are recognized during the opening ceremony. They are also asked to participate in a victory lap during the start of the Relay®. Luminarias are available for donation to remember someone who is currently fighting cancer or for someone who has already lost their battle. They are lit during the Relay For Life® Luminaria Ceremony once the sun goes down. Participants are asked to raise a personal goal of at least $100, but it is not requirement. The only cost is a $10 registration fee that must be paid when you sign up for the Relay®. To participate in the Sussex County Cancer Coalition's team, call Helen Homeijer, at 973-579-0570 ext 1212, or visit www.relayforlife.org.
