February is American Heart Month

February has been designated as American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease. Many Americans do not know that it is the leading cause of death is in the United States and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 700,000 people die each year from the disease. "Heart disease" is a broader term that is used to reference many conditions pertaining to disease of the heart. Coronary heart disease is one of the most common in the US, and can result in irregular heartbeats, angina, and even a heart attack.

The good news is that there are ways you can lower your risk for heart disease by learning about the risk factors, the signs and symptoms, and prevention. Some preventative steps you can take include controlling high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, controlling diabetes, not using tobacco products, moderate use of alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising routinely, and consuming a healthy diet. Overall, making healthier lifestyle choices can often reduce a person's chances for developing heart disease.
