ARRA Funds to Help Families Going Fast

Funds for fuel, utilities, back rent to help prevent homelessness going fast.

The Sussex County Department of Human Services has received $140,000 in ARRA funds to be used by eligible families to assist in paying for oil and other home heating fuels, utilities, back rent, and other expenses that will help to prevent homelessness. Funds are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis. As of September 21, only $63,034.43 remains available for distribution to families in financial need, but these funds must be used by September 30, 2010.

This new allocation brings Sussex County's total award for homelessness prevention service for 2010 to $527,578.00. To demonstrate the great need for homeless prevention services here in our community, Sussex County expended their 2009 additional ARRA award of $40,000 in a matter of days. The 2009 total allocation for direct services of $205,207.00 was used to help Sussex County families with oil and other deliverable fuels, as well as homelessness prevention.

Families are urged to call the Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services at (973) 383-3600 to be pre-screened or stop in the office at 83 Spring Street, Newton, as soon as possible to find out if they are eligible for assistance because funding ends on September 30, 2010.
