Office of GIS Receives Mapping Awards
Release Date: October 16, 2007

On April 25th the Sussex County

On April 25th the Sussex County Office of GIS Management (SCOGISM) and the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group (WRWMG) participated in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) 20th Annual GIS Mapping Competition and placed second in the category of Best Analytical Presentation. The map developed for the competition by the SCOGISM and the WRWMG was also awarded Best Scientific Map by the New Jersey Academy of the Sciences.

The entry titled "Non-Point Source Pollutant Loads in the Papakating Creek Watershed - TMDL Implementation Methodology" is a GIS-based methodology / model for estimating annual surface water pollutant loads. The developed methodology is being used for the quantification of annual total phosphorus, nitrogen, and sediment loads for a watershed under present, future (100% build-out), future, and natural state conditions for a single or multiple, contiguous sub-watersheds.

Maps in this category were judged primarily for their effectiveness in clearly and aesthetically presenting the results of a spatial analysis project. While the analysis is relevant, judging emphasized presentation, along with how well the map communicates the analytical procedures used.

The NJDEP Mapping Contest is open to state employees, non-profit organizations, college students, county/municipal and local government and offers the opportunity to share one’s work and expertise with colleagues. The contest focuses on the exchange of ideas and is a good forum to discuss mapping techniques, layouts and graphic design. Winning maps go on to compete internationally at the annual ESRI International User Conference for publication in the ESRI Map Book.

In addition, the NJDEP and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program has invited the SCOGISM to present the methodology/model to the Watershed Restoration Planning Working Group in September.

The cooperative partnership between the Sussex County Office of GIS Management and the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group offers each group the ability to impart unique knowledge through cooperative data sharing, GIS technology and joint application utilization. Completion of joint projects shows the progress and accomplishments that have been made as a result of the strong cooperative stakeholder partnership.
