The Balancing Act for Seniors

The Sussex County Division of Senior Services in collaboration with AmeriBalance and Warren Hospital Balance Center is taking “The Balancing Act” on the road.  This special initiative was introduced to Sussex County seniors at Older Americans Day, on May 11, 2007 , at Selective Insurance in Branchville.  Balance screenings will be offered at various locations on a monthly basis.  The first screenings will take place at the Vernon Senior Center , on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 , and at Liberty Towers in Newton , on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 .  Both screenings will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.   Blood pressure screenings will also be offered.  Appointments are necessary.

Falls are a leading cause of disability and even death among seniors.   Statistics indicate that the rate of falls among Sussex County seniors exceeds the overall rate for all New Jersey seniors.  This is a concern as seniors strive to remain as independent as possible in their homes and communities.  Falls can be the result of a variety of factors including, but not limited to, blood pressure, medication reaction, diabetes, vision problems, foot problems and the environment.  Balance problems are often overlooked contributors to falls.  Once identified, balance problems can be addressed with exercises that “retrain your brain.”  Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator for the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services stated, “I am excited about this innovative program that will benefit seniors through our public/private partnerships.”

The Balance Screening takes only about ten (10) minutes.  “We hope seniors will take advantage of this opportunity to invest in their future health and safety.   We are planning to bring The Balancing Act Road Show to Senior Centers,   Senior Clubs, Active Adult Communities and Senior residences of all types,” said Mary Lou Schnurr, Director for the Division of Senior Services.  Call the Sussex County Division of Senior Services at 973 579-0555 to schedule an appointment at one of the currently scheduled Balancing Screenings or to schedule a screening at your location.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of Sussex County residents through an integrated approach to comprehensive services that meet the needs of individuals, families and communities.
