Please review the following message and attachments from Calliope Alexander, Seafood and Shellfish Project Leader, Food and Drug Safety Program, DHSS, concerning the recall of Uneviscerated Smoked Sardines packaged and distributed by C&K of Elmwood Park, NJ due to the risk of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium whose toxin can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
The first attachment is a picture of the uneviserated product for reference. The second attachment itemizes which towns and retail locations were delivered this questionable product.
The Local Health Officer of Elmwood Park, where this product originates, has overseen a voluntary detruction of the product by the unlicensed producer. C & K was found to be operating in a residential setting as an unlicensed, non-compliant food establishment.
The health departsments/municipalities that have vendors in the second attachment are asked to contact their vendor within their municipality to observe if they have product and to restrict its sale due to violations as administered and referenced in the state sanitary code:
1. Product originates from a location operating as an unlicensed wholesale establishment.
2. No legitimite processing observed at Elmwood park location.
3. Product is sold in an aerobic packaging/uneviscerated state - No control of C. Botulinum and Histamine levels
4. Legal reference - 21 CFR 123
IT IS EMPHASIZED THAT THIS IS TO BE CONSIDERED A PARTIAL LIST OF CUSTOMERS THEREFORE ALL HEALTH DEPARTMENT ARE REQUESTED TO BE ATTENTIVE IF THEY OBSERVE THIS PRODUCT.
