Newton, NJ January 4, 2016 - The Youth Services Department of the Sussex County Library System invites all parents and caregivers of young children to join with them in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative.

"Early literacy is a prime predictor of school success and reading with young children is a crucial first step" states Youth Services Librarian, Rachel Burt. "The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program provides a framework and encouragement for parents and children alike to keep reading no matter how busy life becomes."

Beginning January 4 parents and caregivers can stop by any Branch of the Sussex County Library System to register and receive log sheets, reading suggestions and even instructions on downloading a free app that allows users to scan books' barcodes and track their reading through a personal account. Children will be encouraged to return to the library at regular intervals to show their logs and collect small prizes.

"1000 Books Before Kindergarten sounds like a big number, but if you sit with your child and read a book or two a night, before you know it you're halfway there. And it's fun!"

Another way the SCLS encourages early literacy is through the Lapsit, Preschool and Read & Play programs all beginning the week of January 11th. For more details, dates and times stop by your local Branch or go to the Programs link at www.sussexcountylibrary.org.
