Construction on New Trinity St. Traffic Lights, Spring St. One-Way to Commence in Downtown Newton

Note: This information was provided by newtontownhall.com

The Town of Newton announces construction will begin on July 20th on Trinity Street for the placement of two new traffic light signals. The signal locations are at the intersection of Moran Street and Trinity Street and the intersection of Union Place and Trinity Street Both signals are being placed due to construction of the one-way of Spring Street as well as to address traffic issues within these areas related to accidents and pedestrian safety. Upon completion of the traffic lights, upgrades will be completed on sidewalks between Moran Street and Union Place to comply with ADA regulations. The final portion of this project will be the milling and paving of Trinity Street. The entire project will be completed by October 1, 2015 (tentative).

Construction will begin on July 27th on Spring Street. The first phase of the project will be the re-striping by NJDOT around the square eliminating the right-turn lane onto Spring Street. Bump-outs will be created at the intersection of Route 206 and Spring Street as well as Madison Street and Spring Street to provide pedestrian safety when entering the crosswalks. As part of this project all of Spring Street will be milled and paved. Once this is completed, the upgraded crosswalks will be constructed with concrete headers and bricks within the crosswalk. This roadway enhancement will provide visual appeal to the street. The crosswalks will be a focal point for pedestrian safety. Also, as part of the project there will be an area placed in front of the Fire Museum with brick pavers and a decorative 'N' which will be built to provide a gathering area when the roadway is closed for special events such as Newton Day, the Memorial Day Parade, Taste of Newton, and the Holiday Parade. Parking will increase on Spring Street between Madison Street and Route 206 with an additional 20 spaces.

In addition, the Parking Authority has approved free parking in Lot #1 (Adams), Lot #4 (Central Plaza) and Lot #5 (Eastern Plaza) for the period of July 13, 2015 - September 11, 2015, Monday through Friday, 8am-6pm. Individuals are asked to take advantage of this free parking and continue to patronize the fine dining establishments and boutiques found on Spring Street. "The Town is making a significant investment in Spring Street and Trinity Street both for pedestrian access and public safety," stated Thomas S. Russo, Jr., Newton Town Manager. "We thank residents, business owners and visitors for their patience during these critical infrastructure projects and look forward to the timely and successful completion of same."
