Points to Ponder on the Primary

A Primary Election narrows the field of candidates running for office in the General Election. Every vote is important in a Primary Election because the candidate with the most votes will go on to the General Election as that party's nominee. The Primary Election gives voters a clear voice in the election process in selecting the representative for that party.

Currently, the only political parties who hold primaries are the Democratic and Republican parties, and only voters who have declared an affiliation with these two parties are permitted to vote. An unaffiliated voter MAY vote in a Primary Election by declaring a party choice at the polls. The unaffiliated voter then becomes a "member" of that party, but can easily return to their unaffiliated status by contacting the Board of Elections to request a party change form.

A voter has 55 days before a Primary Election to file a change of party request with the Board of Elections.

Contact the Board of Elections by calling them at 973-579-0950, or stopping by at 83 Spring St, Suite 305, Newton. They are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will have extended hours on May 12th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for the registration of new voters. Registration and party change forms can be found on their website: www.sussex.nj.us/elections.
