Tablet Training
The holidays have come and gone. You have your shiny new device. Now what? Beginning in January, there will be two monthly Open Houses at the Main Library where you can bring in any type of device - smart phone, tablet, laptop, or latest hybrid and get assistance on using eBooks, as well as other library online services. Additionally, this will be an opportunity for you to share tips with fellow users. The first Open Houses will be held on Saturday, January 3 from 2:00- 4:00, and on Wednesday, January 7 from 6:30 - 8:00. The Open Houses will continue on the first Wednesday and Saturday of each month at the same times.

The Sussex County Library System is Moving to the 3M Cloud Library for eBooks
It is with reluctance that we report that the Sussex County Library will be leaving Overdrive, the company that provides eBooks through DigitalLibraryNJ. This is due to prohibitive licensing that doesn't allow the library to exercise proper ownership and control of eBooks. The change to 3M is scheduled to take place on March 1st.

The DigitalLibraryNJ consortium agreement will continue with the following participants: Sussex County Library System, the Sparta Library, Sussex County Community College, Warren County Library System, Hackettstown Public Library, Philipsburg Public Library, Bernardsville Public Library, Clarence Dillon Public Library (Bedminster), Flemington Public Library, Franklin Public Library(Somerset), and Lambertville Public Library. The Hunterdon, Passaic, and Centenary College libraries have withdrawn from the Consortium, and the Morris County libraries will not participate during the first year.

The Sussex Library will still have the Axis360 eBook collection. The collection is only for the use of Sussex County Library patrons. It contains over 1,000 titles.

We will begin our transition to the 3M Cloud Library, effective March 1, 2015. Our subscription to Overdrive will expire at the end of February. Beginning around January 15th, patrons will not be able to place requests on the Overdrive titles. The new 3M Cloud Library will work with iPad , iPhone, iPod Touch, Nook devices, Kobo, and Android tablets and phones.

The Kindle Paperwhite will not be compatible with the 3M Cloud Library. Some e-readers, such as the Nook and Kobo, will be supported but may require synching using a USB card through a PC or a Mac. The Kindle Fire will require loading the 3M Cloud Library app. Please contact the library, or check the library's website, for assistance with the 3M app.

More details will be coming throughout January, so stay tuned for specifics. For a general discussion of the problems that libraries are facing in the eBook marketplace, we recommend these articles:

Open Borrowing Program (Change)
This popular program, which the library has participated in since 2006, will change starting January 1, 2015. The libraries in Bergen County (BCCLS), will no longer offer Open Borrowing services to patrons from outside their service area. The service will remain in place for Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties. We are sorry for the inconvenience to our patrons, but this was a situation beyond our control.

Those patrons who still want to borrow from a Bergen County Library and who work in a Bergen town, should check with the library to see if they offer a free non-resident employee library card. Some libraries do. You may be asked to bring in a letter on company letterhead verifying your employment in that town.

Any Sussex County Library patron, with a valid library card and is in good standing, is eligible for Open Borrowing. Open Borrowing allows Sussex County residents to go to any participating library and borrow material from that library.
