The Sussex County Department of Human Services recently thanked over 30 of their volunteers at an event held in recognition of National Volunteer Week. The event was held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the Sussex County Administrative Center, Newton, NJ. The program began with a reception where each volunteer received a Certificate of Appreciation. Several volunteers remained after the reception to attend the Board of Chosen Freeholder meeting so as to accept a Proclamation given by the Freeholders in their honor.

The Proclamation stated in part, "Volunteers are one of Sussex County's greatest assets in that they are dedicated to helping others and unselfishly give their personal time to make a difference."

The Sussex County Department of Human Services has over 175 volunteers providing services within three divisions; the Division of Community and Youth Services, Division of Social Services, and the Division of Senior Services. The volunteers within the Division of Community and Youth Services serve on the following advisory boards: the Mental Health Board, the Local Advisory Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the Youth Services Commission, County Alliance Steering Subcommittee, and the Human Services Advisory Council. The volunteers for the Division of Social Services provide bill paying assistance to vulnerable individuals, manage the food pantry and serve on the Citizens Advisory Council for Transportation. In the Division of Senior Services, volunteers serve on the Senior Advisory Council, Senior Clubs, State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), and assist as leaders for wellness programs.

Without the support and dedication of these volunteers, the Department of Human Services could not provide the much needed services and programs for the residents of Sussex County. Additional information regarding volunteer opportunities can be obtained at humanservices@sussex.nj.us or call 973-579-0559.
