Build A Better World @ Your Local Library

The Sussex County Library System is gearing up for its annual Summer Reading Program. The program is open to people of all ages, from birth to senior citizens. When people think about the Summer Reading Program, they associate it mostly with reading incentives. And while we do offer reading rewards for all ages, the value of Summer Reading goes far beyond the toys and gift certificates our enthusiastic readers earn.

Reading over the summer is incredibly important for students and their academic achievement. Studies have shown that children who don't read over the summer experience "summer learning loss," which essentially means that they forget what they've learned during the school year. The effect is cumulative, so if it happens every summer, students can find themselves years behind before middle school. Luckily, participating in the Summer Reading Program and attending free library programs keeps "summer learning loss" at bay.

The Summer Reading Program and all of its associated activities are absolutely free, offering everyone safe, educational opportunities throughout the summer. This year, all library branches will host different programs featuring Sciencetellers, Rizzo's Reptiles, magicians, storytellers, musicians, and more. The Libraries will also offer parent/child classes, including Read & Play (ages 6 months through 4 years) and Lunch Bunch (grades K-2).

The theme of this year's Summer Reading Program is "Build a Better World." This affords the Library a great opportunity to offer programs centered on building, engineering, and STEM-based learning. The theme also allows for programs and activities that teach children about community helpers and the roles they can play in being good citizens and improving the world around them.

Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins on June 19 and the Program comes to a close on August 12.
