The Sussex County Division of Health, Office of Public Health Nursing received a service award from the New Jersey Department of Health for demonstrating the most improved immunization coverage rates and/or practices in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New Jersey Vaccines for Children Program. Sussex County Public Health Nursing was one of three recipients of the award, chosen from many health departments and private practices in the State of New Jersey. The Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program helps provide vaccines to children whose parents or guardians cannot afford them. This helps ensure that all children have an opportunity of receiving the recommended vaccinations on schedule. The Vaccine for Adults (VFA) Program provides free vaccines to adults with no insurance coverage as well. Funding for the program is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC purchases vaccines at a discount and distributes them to VFC provider grantees which in turn distribute them at no charge.

The Office of Public Health Nursing Well Baby Clinic (CHC) and Health Check Clinic provide free vaccines to both uninsured children and adults within Sussex County. As a VFC provider, the public health nurses ensure safe vaccine storage and handling, proper record keeping and documentation as well as proper vaccine emergency procedures if necessary.
