Sussex County Department of Human Services Provides Child Abuse Prevention Training
The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Community and Youth Services organized a child sexual abuse prevention training entitled "Stewards of Children" on September 20, 2012. The Division received a grant from the NJ Department of Children and Families for the provision of child abuse prevention efforts. The Division decided to utilize the grant funding to offer a prevention training called "Stewards of Children" to the community. The training was created by an international non-profit organization, Darkness to Light.
The "Stewards of Children" evidence-based prevention program, designed for youth-serving organizations, parents and concerned citizens, teaches adults how to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. According to Darkness to Light, "Stewards of Children is the only nationally distributed program proven to increase knowledge, improve attitudes and change child protective behaviors."
With assistance from the Sussex County Keep Kids Safe committee, the Division recruited eleven members from the community to become authorized facilitators of the prevention curriculum, "Stewards of Children." On September 20, the eleven participants completed eight hours of training comprised of various components: 1.) a three-part DVD presentation with commentary from sexual abuse survivors, experts in the field and concerned adults; 2.) a focus on prevention strategies for youth-serving organizations such as implementing policies and screening for employees/volunteers; and 3.) an interactive workbook to facilitate discussion and assist in developing a personal action plan.
The eleven participants are now authorized facilitators of "Stewards of Children" and can now provide trainings in the community to teach adults how to prevent, recognize and react to child sexual abuse. Community groups such as recreational organizations, parent-teacher associations, youth-serving organizations, schools, and municipalities among others will be contacted with further information and availability of this important prevention initiative. To schedule a training or for more information, please contact Christine Florio, Sussex County Division of Community and Youth Services, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (973) 948-6000 ext. 1381.
