Newton, New Jersey - August, 2012 - The County of Sussex, NJ is proud to announce it has been awarded a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award for its use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies within county and local governments at the 2012 International Users Conference sponsored by the Esri which was held the week of July 23rd, 2012 in San Diego, CA. The Users Conference is attended by over 15,000 GIS users, from 131 countries.

The County of Sussex, New Jersey has embarked on an initiative which integrates GIS technology as an integral part of an overall enterprise management strategy to improve operating efficiencies, eliminate non-value added activities and implement a common infrastructure for county and local government. Examples of GIS integration can be found in various County agencies such as the Engineering Division, Planning Division, Health Department, Public Safety, and Board of Election as well as the public. Sussex County has also embraced GIS in the "cloud" with a new publicly accessible web site called the ArcGIS Online Collaborative Center (http://sussex.maps.arcgis.com/homeĀ external link). This website provides a public portal to information pertaining to road/bridge closures, sewer service areas, West Nile disease surveillance, public services, election polling places, and more.

The SAG Award ceremony is held at the annual Esri International User Conference and presided over by Jack Dangermond, the president and founder of Esri.

Recipients of the Special Achievement in GIS award are submitted by Esri staff from thousands of organizations worldwide, then personally reviewed and selected by their president and founder.

In 2010, Esri selected Sussex County as a "Model County" for using geography to understand the complex relationships between people, places and things by turning ordinary data into actionable information. This information has helped Sussex County make more informed business decisions and effectively communicate with the community and become a model for the nation.
