Skylands Ride Participates in the
2012 New Jersey Paratransit Roadeo
Drivers from community transit systems and Access Link from across the state participated in the 2012 New Jersey Paratransit Roadeo on the 28th of April. The event was held this year at Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. The Roadeo highlights the expertise, skill and knowledge of the bus drivers. Drivers take a written test that covers the operations of the bus, the lift, safe driving, customer service, and prepping the bus to be utilized. The road course tests the driver’s ability to operate the bus smoothly, in addition to their skill in parking, stopping, backing-up, making tight turns and other obstacles. Wheel chair securement and bus preparation are also tested.
Twenty eight drivers participated in the Roadeo this year. First, second, and third place were won by drivers of Cape May Fare Free. Cape May has a Roadeo course set up on site at their bus yard and they practice year round. Omnibus Operator Doug Maull has participated in the NJ State Roadeo for the past two years representing Sussex County Skylands Ride. He placed in the top ten drivers both years. Doug’s excellent mastery of Omnibus Operations and customer service is representative of the services provided to Sussex County residents by Skylands Ride’s top notch staff. Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator for the Sussex County Department of Human Services said, “We are proud of the services provided to Sussex County citizens each day by Skylands Ride. The Skylands Ride team always goes the extra step to ensure high quality service. Doug’s participation in the Roadeo highlights the commitment of the staff to maintain a high level of skill and focus on rider safety.”
