Sussex County Provides Services and Outreach to Homeless

Sussex County held its fourth annual Project Homeless Connect and its eighth Point in Time homeless count on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. Project Homeless Connect is a one stop shop event in which human services agencies, medical facilities, local businesses and community members come together to provide services and information to homeless or at-risk families and individuals. Approximately, 70 attendees were linked up to various services including housing, legal assistance, behavioral health, public benefits such as Medicaid, Food Stamps & TANF, emergency food, heating and utility assistance, free flu shots, blood pressure screenings, giveaways and free haircuts. Originating in San Francisco in 2004, the Project Homeless Connect model has been used in over 130 cities across the country and due to its success, it continues to be replicated.

The Point in Time homeless count provides the human service community, county government and officials, volunteers and the general public an unduplicated count of our homeless and chronically homeless according to HUD (Department of Housing and Urban Development) definition. Surveys are completed with homeless or at-risk of being homeless families and individuals in order to capture an accurate picture of our community. Conducting the Point in Time is truly a community endeavor in which social service agencies, schools, municipalities, police officers, hospitals, food pantries, and community members join together with one goal in mind: to find the homeless and help provide linkages to services. The data collected from the completed surveys is used for planning purposes, needs assessments, funding recommendations, service decisions, and funding applications.

Sussex County has been committed to helping individuals and families, who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, receive needed services and transition into permanent housing. The long-term goal is to end homelessness in our community.
