State Commends Senior Services

(Newton, NJ) The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services, also known as the local Area Agency on Aging, has been commended by the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Aging and Community Services for its dedication and service to seniors and their caregivers in Sussex County. The Division of Aging and Community Services recently completed its annual programmatic and fiscal desk audit that is conducted to ensure compliance with the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended, federal regulations and state policies. Each Area Agency on Agency is evaluated based on 79 standards. The state uses a three-tier evaluation system of red, yellow, green to determine compliance. The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services scored in the green, the highest tier.

The Division is responsible for the distribution of federal, state, and county funds to providers of senior services including but not limited to care management, in-home health services, adult day care, legal services, congregate nutrition, home delivered meals, caregiver support programs, safe housing/residential maintenance and transportation. The goal of these programs is to maximize independence so that seniors can continue living in their homes and communities for as long as possible. The funding is designated for persons aged 60 and over or caregivers of this population.

Direct services provided by the Division include Information, Assistance and Referral, Health Promotion programs, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which helps Medicare beneficiaries with choosing a Part D and/or a supplemental medical insurance provider and assists with any Medicare related questions or billing issues.
