(Newton, NJ) The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services and Newton Memorial Hospitalwill participate in National Memory Screening Day, Tuesday, November 16, 2010, by offering seniors a one-hour educational program, "Keeping your Mind Sharp," and FREE Memory Screenings performed by a qualified health care professional. The event will take place at the Sussex Fire House, 25 Loomis Avenue, Sussex, N.J. Memory screenings will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. "Keeping Your Mind Sharp" will be presented at 12:45 p.m. for the convenience of those who would like to attend before or after their memory screenings.
An initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), National Memory Screening Day is designed to promote detection of memory problems and provide education about successful aging. The face-to-face, noninvasive screening takes only about five to ten minutes and consists of a series of questions and tasks.
AFA encourages screenings for adults who have memory concerns, a family history of Alzheimer’s disease or who want to check their memory now to have the results available for future comparison. The results do not represent a diagnosis, and AFA advises those individuals who score poorly, or who have normal scores but are still concerned, to follow-up with their physicians or other qualified healthcare professionals. Results of the Memory Screening are strictly confidential.
