October 2, 2010 - E-Waste Recycling Event
Release Date: September 28, 2010

October 2, 2010 - E-Waste Recycling Event

The final free collection event for 2010 for local residents and businesses to recycle used computers and other electronic equipment. The SCMUA has partnered with Supreme Asset Management Recovery, Inc. to provide the E-Waste collection and recycling service at the Solid Waste/Recycling Facility from 7:00 am - 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 2nd. Supreme transports the collected items to their Lakewood, NJ. facility where the materials are demanufactured and recycled for reuse.

Tons of used electronic equipment has been collected at the SCMUA as of August 2010, including computer systems, printers, televisions, cell phones and consumer electronic media devices. "As people upgrade their computers, televisions and other electronic media, more and more items are being disposed of or stored improperly. We are excited to take a leadership role in providing Sussex County residents and businesses with a community-based approach, free-of-charge service, to reduce the amount of electronic products entering the waste stream," said SCMUA Administrator John Hatzelis. "Tremendous response from the community has diverted these materials from the landfill and saved valuable resources."

Used consumer electronics could harm the environment if disposed of improperly. E-Waste contains lead, mercury, nickel, cadmium and other hazardous materials. In planning for E-Waste Recycling in Sussex County, the SCMUA has worked with local municipalities, businesses, schools and residents to increase awareness of the program. The ever-increasing development of new electronic devices being matched by the escalating demand of consumers, needs to be offset by providing opportunities for safe collection and recycling.
