The Sussex County Department of Human Services has received $140,000 in
ARRA funds to be used by eligible families to assist in paying for oil and
other home heating fuels, utilities, back rent, and other expenses that
will help to prevent homelessness. Funds are limited and are available on
a first come, first served basis. As of September 21, only $63,034.43
remains available for distribution to families in financial need, but
these funds must be used by September 30, 2010.
This new allocation brings Sussex County's total award for homelessness
prevention service for 2010 to $527,578.00. To demonstrate the great
need for homeless prevention services here in our community, Sussex
County expended their 2009 additional ARRA award of $40,000 in a matter
of days. The 2009 total allocation for direct services of $205,207.00
was used to help Sussex County families with oil and other deliverable
fuels, as well as homelessness prevention.
Families are urged to call the Department of Human Services, Division of
Social Services at (973) 383-3600 to be pre-screened or stop in the office
at 83 Spring Street, Newton, as soon as possible to find out if they are
eligible for assistance because funding ends on September 30, 2010.
