Human Services in Sussex County
Release Date: June 01, 2010

Human Services in Sussex County

The Sussex County Department of Human Services is dedicated to serving the County’s most vulnerable residents. The Department is committed to providing comprehensive, quality human services to our community in an efficient, cost-effective and dignified manner. The Board of Chosen Freeholders is supportive of our efforts and has allocated Grant-In-Aid funding to be utilized for human services based on the priority areas identified in the 2008 County-wide Human Services Needs Assessment. These priority areas include affordable housing, behavioral health services & healthcare access, transportation, subsidized child care & respite services and youth activities.

In response to the identified needs, extremely beneficial and unduplicated services have been funded to assist economically disadvantaged families, individuals with disabilities, elderly residents, and individuals working towards self-sufficiency. In this current economic climate, the value and economic impact of funding human services is clearly seen when a single mother, who is working full-time, is provided a child care subsidy, which allows her to remain self-sufficient and maintain her current affordable housing. In the family receiving legal assistance avoiding foreclosure and is able to remain in their home. The individual who is receiving regular mental health counseling and due to the supportive services provided is able to maintain employment and housing. Through Grant-In-Aid funding, nine homeless clients with mental health diagnoses are living self-sufficiently in the community and not in a cost-prohibitive institutional setting.

Funding human services and providing opportunities for individuals and families to reach their full potential improves the quality of life for the clients served and also for Sussex County. Below is a listing of all services funded in 2010 through Grant-In-Aid:
