As the nation's economic crisis ripples throughout the state, an increasing number of people are having difficulty meeting their basic needs.  Rising costs for gas to get to work, coupled with high rent and utility bills are forcing families to make painful choices about other necessities like food and medicine.

Sussex County Social Services and Sussex County Senior Services have joined with the County Welfare Directors Association of New Jersey and ShopRite to partner with Essex County and the New Jersey Anti-Hunger Coalition to help eligible people receive nutrition assistance through the Food Stamp Program.

Essex County will dispatch its Mobile Citizen Services Office to the Newton and Franklin ShopRite supermarket locations.  Sussex County Social Services' staff will work from the mobile office and assist clients in applying for Food Stamps and other social services for which they may be eligible.  Sussex County Senior Services will provide Information and Referral Services.

The state-of-the-art outreach vehicle is the size of a bus and is outfitted with a waiting room and three private offices so clients can be served in a confidential and professional manner.  The mobile office is wheelchair accessible and is equipped with wireless internet connection and a fax machine so applications can be processed on site.

For information about Food Stamps or other social services feel free to call the Sussex County Division of Social Services at 973-383-3600 or visit their office in person at 83 Spring Street, Suite 203, Newton.  Sussex County Senior Services may be reached at 973-579-0555 or visit their office in person at One Spring Street, Newton.  The Divisions of Social Services and Senior Services are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
