Sussex County Plans for Next Homeless Count & Project Homeless Connect Release Date: October 20, 2008
Sussex County Plans for Next Homeless Count & Project Homeless Connect
Sussex County has been conducting a homeless count entitled the "Point in Time" survey since 2004 in order to get a snapshot of the homeless families and individuals in our community. The Point in Time survey provides the human service community an unduplicated count of our homeless and an estimated number of our chronically homeless at any given point in time. Through the survey, demographic characteristics can be collected, patterns can be recognized and services needed for this population can be determined, including additional shelter and supportive housing services. The human service community then has the information at hand to pinpoint the resources needed to fill gaps in services. The Point in Time survey is also a valuable tool for presenting information for local, state and regional planning.
It is that time of year again when Sussex County is planning its upcoming Point in Time survey. The next survey will be conducted on January 28, 2009 in conjunction with our annual Project Homeless Connect event. The past two years, Sussex County has held a one-day, one-stop resource filled community event for people who are currently homeless or at-risk of being homeless. Resources that have been available at the event include housing information, food stamp & Medicaid applications, food and clothing vouchers, heating assistance applications, legal assistance, veterans' services, free flu shots, medical van, substance abuse treatment information, haircuts and massages, hygiene supplies, warm clothing and coats. One of the main goals of Project Homeless Connect is to hook people up with needed services in one day at one convenient location where people feel comfortable and welcomed.
Volunteers are needed for the upcoming Point in Time survey and for the Project Homeless Connect event. For the Point in Time survey, two field teams of volunteers go out into the community on structured routes to identify homeless individuals and families and then conduct a survey with them to collect needed data. Volunteers are needed at the Project Homeless Connect site to conduct Point in Time surveys for attendees, man and restock tables of coats, hygiene products and giveaways, conduct exit interviews with attendees and mentor individuals through the various services. If anyone is interested in volunteering, please contact Christine Florio at (973) 948-6000 ext. 226 or email@example.com.
