The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is inviting you to participate in the National Radon Poster Contest in partnership with the National Safety Council and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The goals are to raise awareness about the harmful effects of elevated levels of indoor radon gas and to increase the number of homes tested for radon.

The national winner, a parent and teacher (or sponsoring organization’s representative) will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. culminating with the unveiling of the poster at an awards ceremony. The winning poster will also be reproduced for national distribution. In addition, select prizes will be given by the DEP to the first, second, and third place winners in New Jersey, as well as the school with the highest number of posters submitted.

The contest is open to all students ages 9-14. The deadline for entries is October 15, 2008.
An Artwork Submission Form must be completed, signed by a parent or guardian, and submitted with the poster (preferably taped to the back of the poster). Pertinent information is available at www.nsc.org/issues/radon. Applicants should submit posters to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Radon Section at the following address where they will be judged for entry in the national and state contests:

The EPA is sponsoring a Radon Video Contest at www.radonvideocontest.com using the popular website YouTube, as a means to educate the public about the dangers of radon and to promote testing. Submissions must be 30-60 seconds in length with the theme "Radon: Test,Fix,Save a Life".

The contest website www.radonvideocontest.com provides instructions on entering the contest, explains the contest rules, and provides a link to the YouTube contest group. Entrants have until August 25th to submit a video. A panel of EPA employees will choose a winner, who will receive a $2,500 award and have his or her video shown at the National Radon Training Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 15-17, 2008.
