Sussex County Senior of the Year Named
Release Date: August 08, 2008

Doris Lantz Named
"Sussex County Senior of the Year"
The Sussex County Division of Senior Services is pleased to announce that Doris Lantz, of Newton, was named "Sussex County Senior of the Year" during the Senior Day festivities at the NJ State Fair / Sussex County Farm and Horse Show. Karen Magill, who nominated Ms. Lantz, describes her as a "tireless advocate for vulnerable people." In the early 1970's, she was instrumental in initiating the Meals on Wheels program in Sussex County. Ms. Lantz has volunteered with People Help, the Samaritan Inn hotline and the Interfaith Hospitality Network. She has been a homeless shelter chaperone and is a staunch advocate for affordable housing for all who need it regardless of age. While diminutive in size, at age 84, Ms. Lantz is not afraid to speak up on behalf of the less fortunate to community leaders, which she has done at countless meetings. She is an active member of the Human Services and Senior Services Advisory Councils. These are just a few examples of Doris Lantz's dedication to helping those in need. She is truly deserving of the honor bestowed upon her.
The Award Committee had a difficult time choosing one person from 15 outstanding nominees including Stuart Baker, Sussex; Angela Catalano, Newton; John Degutis, Hampton; June Dobson, Byram Township; Wasco Hadowanetz, Ogdensburg; Julius (Bud) Hintenach, Green Township; Ernest Hofer, Sparta; Russell McCue, Andover Township; Janet Neidhardt, Branchville; Joy Ricker, Wantage; William Sanford, Hampton Township; Anna Mae Schurko, Hamburg; Betty Space, Newton; and Barbara Young, Wantage. All nominees were acknowledged at the Senior Day festivities. The service to others reflected in the profiles submitted on behalf of all of the nominees embodies thousands of hours devoted to school, community and church boards, senior clubs, scouts, 4-H and other organizations. Their contributions of time and talent have touched hospitals, nursing homes, churches, homeless shelters, food pantries, hospices, schools, local government, historical societies, community members of all ages and even pets. Each of these individuals serves as an example to all on how to be contributors to society and builders of a better world, beginning in their own backyards.
