Knoll Shared Housing Celebrates a Milestone!
Release Date: July 14, 2008

Almost three years to the day, Knoll Shared Housing is almost fully leased. This senior subsidized housing was made possible through a partnership of the Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Board of the Sparta Ecumenical Council on Senior Citizen Housing, sponsor of Knoll Heights Village and Knoll View.

Knoll Shared Housing is located off of Morris Turnpike, just a half mile beyond the Main Branch of the County Library. They consist of two, five bedroom ranch style homes. Each spacious bedroom has its own large bathroom. The cathedral ceiling living room, windowed dining room and large modern kitchen are shared by each of the housemates. Meals are prepared and shared in common.

At a formal recognition ceremony in May, sponsored by the residents of Knoll Shared Housing, each of the Freeholders was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a plant. "The seeds you have sown have blossomed into a miracle," one of the residents said at the Freeholder Meeting. "Without Knoll Shared Housing, I'm not sure if I would still be alive," another testified.  Glen Vetrano, Deputy Director of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, stated, "There has long been a need for affordable housing for our seniors.  It is my hope that other municipal leaders will take the opportunity to replicate this model in their towns."

The rent is subsidized by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. Residents must have an income of less than $23,600 and pay 25% of their monthly income toward rent. There is a small additional fee to offset food and services.

Current residents have a variety of backgrounds from nursing to independent businesswomen. "Circumstances happen out of nowhere and change lives," said a new resident. "This house is a blessing," she continued.
