National Transportation Week
Release Date: April 28, 2008

Sussex County Transit is celebrating 27 years of providing transportation to the residents of Sussex County, and we are pleased to participate in National Transportation Week which will be held May 11-17, 2008.  National Transportation Week provides an opportunity for the transportation community to join together for greater awareness about the importance of transportation.

A lack of transportation can create a barrier between citizens and their ability to survive in a rural setting such as Sussex County.  Since 1981, Sussex County Transit has bridged the gap between the individual needs and resources available to the residents of Sussex County in an attempt to promote the independence, health and well being of each citizen.  The service has evolved into a multi-faceted operation serving a number of programs and publics that provide over 110,000 rides annually and are supported by 23 fleet vehicles and 28 staff members.  Sussex County Transit provides transportation to medical appointments, nutrition sites, food shopping and/or employment through the utilization of a demand response and loop bus service throughout the County.
Sussex County Transit has undergone some re-organization during this past year.  We are now under the auspices of the Department of Human Services, Division of Social Services, where we can better serve our customers with transportation and connect them with other related services.

We are anticipating beginning a new program with the Juvenile Justice Commission to transport young adults to their respective County programs.  In addition, new technology is being evaluated to assist in streamlining driver administrative requirements that delay on time pick-up and drop-off.

With the dedication of our staff and continued support of our partners; the Board of Chosen Freeholders, State and Federal Legislators, NJ Transit and foremost, to our customers, Sussex County Transit is dedicated to moving forward with our goal of providing first class transportation to the citizens of Sussex County.

The Sussex County Office of Transit is open from 5:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  For further information, please contact the Office of Transit directly at 973-579-0480.
