Celebrate National Volunteer Week
Release Date: March 31, 2008

A Time for Gratitude and Opportunity

The Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders joins the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network in honoring volunteers by proclaiming April 27 through May 3, 2008, Volunteer Week in Sussex County. The theme "Inspire by Example," describes the many volunteers who give of their time and talents individually, as group/committee members, and/or as Freeholder appointed members of various advisory boards within the county organization. Volunteer involvement enriches services offered by the County and makes Sussex a great place to live and work. Hal Wirths, Freeholder Director, states, "I have said many times, I don’t know where the county would be without the tremendous amount of volunteers we have. On behalf of the board of Chosen Freeholders, I would like to thank all the volunteers for everything they do for our county."

National Volunteer Week started in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order creating an annual recognition of volunteering and since then, every president has signed a proclamation for this week. According to Robert K. Goodwin, president and chief executive officer of the Points of Light Foundation, "Volunteers perform countless acts of service and are one of America’s most valuable assets. We hope that National Volunteer Week will motivate others to volunteer their time and talent to help our country’s most vulnerable residents- the homeless, the hungry, the elderly, at-risk youth, and the disabled."
